IPGCE: What You Will Study

International Inclusive Education

This module delves into critical discussions on inclusion, examining varied perspectives, including national attitudes, policies, and practices. It acknowledges the complexity of ensuring all learners succeed, influenced by numerous internal and external factors. It explores ‘inclusive practice’ across diverse areas such as Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, second language learners, and children from different socio-economic or minority backgrounds, focusing on educational interventions for exceptional learners.

Contemporary Pedagogies

This module aims to dissect and assess modern educational theories and practices, highlighting the factors shaping teaching and learning in a global setting. It encourages a deep understanding of educational strategies’ intricate and often challenging nature, exploring various current teaching methods and their impacts from diverse perspectives. Critical examination of pedagogical decisions against the backdrop of organisational culture and values offers a platform for debate.

Professional Identity

Professional Identity focuses on two key questions: “Who are you?” and “What impact does that have?” guiding you to define and express your unique professional Identity against the backdrop of educational history and philosophy. It encourages a deep dive into various culturally influenced viewpoints, enhancing your critical appreciation of the academic traditions shaping your perspective as a teacher. Additionally, it broadens your understanding of diverse educational philosophies prevalent in international contexts, contrasting them with your own.

How will you be assessed?

During the 10-week trimester, weekly online classroom sessions will be available, with the option to download these sessions if you cannot attend live. The course is assessed entirely through coursework, employing various methods, including essays, research reports, presentations, group work, and practical reports. This diverse assessment approach allows for a comprehensive evaluation of your understanding and application of the course material. We aim to empower every Derby student to fully leverage their study skills and achieve their highest potential at the master’s level. Our approach further provides students with opportunities to thrive and excel.

Recognition of Prior Learning.

If you think you’ve already covered parts of a course – at another institution, in training, or through experience at work – you may be able to apply for

The RPL at the university lets you use their past learning to get credits or skip ahead in a course. There are rules to follow, and it usually doesn’t work for classes you’ve already done at the same university.

RPL covers both certified and experiential prior learning.
You can enter a programme at an advanced stage through Direct Entry.
Applications for RPL should be made alongside or before programme application.
Credit for RPL is reflected as ‘N’ grade, meaning no grade is transferred.
Limits on the amount of credit that can be claimed based on the level of the programme.

Entry requirements

You must be an established educator who is currently employed 16 hours a week, in educational/classroom context (language centre, kindergarten, tuition centre or school). We can help with the recommendation letter
An undergraduate degree (at least a 2:2) with Honours or equivalent (we can do a pre-screening check)
If English is not your first language, or you have not completed your highest level of qualification in English, you will need an English language qualification. For this course, you will need at least one of the following:
DUOLINGO LANGUAGE ENGLISH TEST – WE RECOMMEND THIS
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 6.0* – also accepting IELTS Indicator (within in the past year)
TOEFL (including TOEFL online) 550 (paper based) 213 (computer based) or 80 (internet based)
International GCE O-level English Language: Grade C
International GCSE English Language /English as a Second Language: Grade C*
