UWE IPGCE Program Guide

The IPGCE is a qualification for educators aiming to advance their teaching skills globally. It is ideal for international school teachers or those aspiring to work in such settings.
 
The IPGCE focuses on modern educational practices, strategies, and cross-cultural teaching methods. You will engage in coursework, practical teaching experiences, and reflective practice.This program allows you to explore and critically assess various educational strategies, tailoring them to your teaching context. You’ll evolve into a well-informed and reflective educator equipped to enhance your teaching practices effectively.

Study Time and Flexibility

The UWE iPGCE program is conducted online over one year, providing the flexibility to set your study schedule while maintaining the necessary structure to keep you on track. Throughout the course, you can experiment with different teaching strategies and assess their effectiveness with your students. Reflection on your progress as an educator is essential to the program.

UWE Entry Requirements and Eligibility

When applying for the iPGCE program, you will need:

  • Undergraduate Degree. An undergraduate degree or equivalent to 2:2 in the UK (negotiable if you have other experience and qualifications)
 
  • Professional Experience. Some experience in teaching, supporting learning, working, and training regularly (0-7 IPGCE EY or 5-18 IPGCE)
 
  • School/Organisation Agreement. Confirmation of engagement on the course. Expectation to complete at least 60 days of teaching and supporting learning during the course. At least 120 hours of direct teaching to groups of eight or more learners.

Confirmation of any required safeguarding clearance.

  • Personal Statement. Upload a personal statement explaining the motivation for the course and expected achievements upon completion (find attached)
 
  • References. Two references from anyone at your current school can be uploaded as a document (which will speed things up). (find attached)
  • English Language Requirements.  
      • If your degree or high school education were taught in English this is sufficient. But you need a letter or certificate as evidence. 
      • The FREE UWE English Language Test
      • The Duo Lingo can be organised through us today.
      • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 6.0
      • TOEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based)
      • Pearson Test of Academic English: 51
      • Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass
      • London Tests of English: we accept level 4 for undergraduate courses
      • International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C
*If you cannot take an English Language Test locally, you may wish to consider THE UWE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST.

UWE Course Content

Module Breakdown

Students will be evaluated through various methods, including portfolio compilations, report submissions, oral presentations, and reflective exercises. Comprehensive assistance is provided to ensure successful preparation for all assignments. 

The iPGCE course consists of two assessed 30-credit modules:

Learning & Teaching

This unit equips future educators with essential educational assessment and evaluation skills. It explores various assessment methods, the importance of formative and summative assessments, and using assessment data to inform teaching practices. By understanding these core principles, educators can measure student learning outcomes, provide constructive feedback, and foster continuous improvement.

Independent Study in Practice

This unit focuses on the practical application of theoretical concepts in a real classroom setting. It allows you to design, implement, and reflect on a teaching project tailored to your educational context. Engaging directly with students and applying best practices in teaching and learning will refine your teaching skills, foster creativity, and ensure you can adapt to the dynamic needs of your students. Although this unit is assessed, it does not award credits.

UWE Online Learning Experience

In the Classroom

To complete the iPGCE, you must complete at least 60 days of teaching and supporting learning, comprising at least 120 hours of direct instruction to groups of eight or more learners.

Online Study

You’ll access all course materials and readings online through our virtual learning platform, Pebble Pad. This platform hosts instructional videos, webinars, discussion activities, and study tasks. Throughout the course, both technical and academic assistance will be provided.

Each module is presented in 10 units in an online workbook, with each unit comprising five steps involving various activities, such as:

  • Lectures
  • Readings
  • Reflections
  • Practice-based activities
  • Peer sharing/discussion boards
  • Teaching
  • Live discussions
  • Reflections on recordings of teaching

All activities are designed to be accessible, stimulating, and directly related to your development as a teaching professional.

Study our international PGCE online over 10 months, delivered in English.

Students should set aside 6 hours a week for research and planning for the 2 assignments.
