Introduction

The FREE UWE Bristol Online English Language Test (ELT) is designed for students who need to meet the English language requirements for their offer at UWE Bristol. It uses the same system and format as the IELTS test, covering listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

  • Format: The ELT mirrors the IELTS test format, assessing listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Duration: 3 hours 10 minutes total.
  • Components:
    • Listening: 40 minutes
    • Reading: 90 minutes
    • Writing: 60 minutes
    • Speaking (if eligible): 10 minutes, conducted online.
  • Usage: Can be used as evidence for most UWE Bristol courses but not for other universities.
  • System: Delivered via the Inspera Exam Portal (IEP) with online invigilation.

System Requirements

  • Windows 10 or 11
  • MacOS Big Sur (version 11) or higher
  • Ensure your device meets these requirements. If not, consider borrowing a compatible device.

Eligibility

  • Must hold a conditional offer to study at UWE Bristol.

Booking the Test

  • Eligible students will receive an email to register for the test.
  • Tests occur bi-weekly on Wednesdays, with registration closing two weeks prior.

Test Format

  1. Register: Upon registration, you will receive an invitation for a test induction.
  2. Induction: Held the Wednesday before the test, requiring you to download the IEP software and complete a system check.
  3. Initial Test Components: Listening, reading, and writing tests occur the following Wednesday after the induction. Instructions and login details will be provided.
  4. Speaking Test: If you pass the initial components, the speaking test will be scheduled for the following week.
  5. Results: Available within 10 days in your welcome portal. Offers will be made unconditional if possible.

Proof of Identity

  • Bring valid ID (e.g., passport) on the test day, matching the ID used during registration.

Cost

  • The first UWE Bristol Online ELT is free. Charges may apply for non-attendance and resits. Notify us as soon as possible if you cannot attend your scheduled test.

UWE English Listening Test

  • Multiple Choice Questions: Based on short recordings, you choose the correct answer from several options.
  • Form Completion: Fill in missing information in a form while listening to a conversation or monologue.
  • Note Completion: Complete notes, summaries, or tables with information from the audio.
  • Sentence Completion: Fill in gaps in sentences based on what you hear.
  • Short-Answer Questions: Answer questions using a few words or phrases after listening to a passage.

UWE English Writing Test

  • Describe, summarise, or explain information in a graph, table, chart, or diagram. 
  • You might also be asked to describe how something works or a process.
  • Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. 
  • This involves presenting your ideas, supporting them with examples, and organising your thoughts clearly.

English Speaking Test 

  • Introduction and Interview: Basic questions about yourself, such as your background, interests, and studies.

  • Long Turn: You speak about a given topic for 1-2 minutes. You’ll have a minute to prepare before speaking.

  • Discussion: A longer discussion based on the topic from the long turn. This involves expressing opinions, discussing issues, and exchanging ideas.

UWE English Reading Test 

  • Multiple Choice Questions: Choose the correct answer from options based on the passage.
  • True/False/Not Given: Decide if statements are true, false, or not given.
  • Matching Information: Match headings or facts with sections of the passage.
  • Sentence Completion: Fill in gaps in sentences using words from the passage.
